E-FILING
Jack Kennedy believes that the Third Judicial District Court should implement electronic filing (e-filing). *His opponent disagrees, claiming it would cost too much. The fact of the matter is we can¡¯t afford not to. E-filing will save taxpayer money and make judges more productive. Here are some of the reasons why:
|
PROBLEM: Third Judicial District Court Judges preside over two separate courtrooms more than 60 miles apart and decide cases filed in two different counties. Did you know that under the current system Judges can¡¯t go online to check their calendars or review active case files? |
|
SOLUTION: E-filing would allow judges to have online access to case files, which would eliminate the need for travel between courthouses when no trials or hearings are set for that courtroom. Not only would taxpayers save on travel expense, it would reduce the time Judges spend traveling, thereby improving productivity. Online calendar access will enable trials to be set promptly and eliminate the slow, cumbersome trial setting questionnaire process. |

PROBLEM: Storage of paper files is expensive, not only in terms of the physical space they take up, but they are difficult to search, and they can become lost or misfiled. |
|
SOLUTION: Electronically filed documents, as well as paper documents that have been scanned into a portable document format (.pdf) take up very little space: for example, on a 2 gigabyte flash drive, which is about the size of your thumb, you can store more than 7,500 eight-page documents (265kb per document). Electronic documents can be retrieved in seconds. |

| PROBLEM: What if courthouse records were damaged in a fire or flood? |
|
SOLUTION: If you have electronic filing, an off-site backup of all case files could be retrieved and normal operations could resume quickly. If the court's records exist only in paper form and are lost to fire or flood, the cost of re-creating those records (if possible) would be astronomical. |

These are just a few examples of how the Third Judicial District Court would benefit from e-filing.
E-filing: another reason why Jack Kennedy is the best choice for Third Judicial District Court Judge, Department 1.
